SKY BET FOOTBALL LEAGUE MANAGER OF THE MONTH AWARDS: AUGUST 2017

The winners of the Sky Bet Manager of the Month Awards for August are:

Sky Bet Championship: Neil Warnock (Cardiff City)

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock has been named the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month for August.

Neil Warnock promised the Cardiff fans a tilt at promotion back in the spring and delivered handsomely on that pledge in August, leading his side through a perfect month with five wins from five games to sit proudly atop the Championship table.

Warnock said: “This is an achievement for all of us at the Club, from the top to the bottom. We’ve made some good signings and integrated them quickly into the group, which isn’t always easy. I’m delighted with the award - for the whole Club and our fantastic fans.”

George Burley chairs the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel.

He said: “Neil has got Cardiff City off to a flying start to the season having won all of their league games so far. They had an impressive away win against Wolverhampton who have splashed out a lot of money during the summer. With Neil’s experience and record of getting teams promotion, Cardiff must be a genuine contender for promotion this season.

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “With a 100% win record club for August you cannot fault Neil Warnock and his Cardiff City side. Warnock is a proven figure at this level and his handling of summer capture Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, who he picked up on a free from Rochdale, has breathed a new lease of life into a Cardiff side which finished 12th last term.”

Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Mikey Mumford said: “The Bluebirds have belied pre-season expectations and title odds of 33/1 and now find themselves second favourites at 7/1 behind big spending Wolves for the Championship crown. They enter September already as short as 1/8 to better their final league position last season and now managing at his 15th professional club, another Warnock promotion –adding to his previous seven - is now just a 7/4 chance.”

Sky Bet League One: Grant McCann (Peterborough United)

Peterborough United manager Grant McCann has been named the Sky Bet League One Manager of the Month for August.

McCann revived the Posh tradition of goals and entertainment in equal measure as he led them to the top of League One with a perfect record of four straight wins with a 12-4 goal differential, which included 4-1 away victories at Bristol Rovers and Northampton.

McCann said: “I am pleased to receive this award for August and it is as much for the players and my coaching staff as it is for me. We spoke in the summer about how we wanted to start the season and worked very hard in pre-season to get the players ready for that opening day against Plymouth. On paper, we had some tough games in the month, but the players put in some good performances and I know there is more to come.”

George Burley chairs the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel.

He said: “Peterborough United have had a great start to the season collecting 13 points from a possible 15 which included an impressive 4 – 1 away win against local rivals Northampton Town. Grant is an exciting young manager who is learning his profession very quickly and has a lethal striker in Jack Marriott who has been in great scoring form.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “McCann signed a four-year deal following his appointment at London Road in May last year and looks to have found the formula for success at the start of his second term at Posh with a glowing 100% win record in August. The Northern Irishman has really strengthened the spine of his side with the arrivals of Jack Marriott, Michael Doughty and the experience of Steven Taylor playing as one of three central defenders.”

Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Mikey Mumford said: “Peterborough had a testing start on paper, entertaining League One newcomers Plymouth and Rotherham sandwiched between a trip to Bristol Rovers and McCann deserves great credit for claiming a maximum points haul in those fixtures - an achievement chalked up as a 12/1 chance by sponsors Sky Bet.”

Sky Bet League Two: Paul Tisdale (Exeter City)

Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale has been named the Sky Bet League Two Manager of the Month for August.

Play-off final heartache in May was followed by young starlet Ollie Watkins leaving in pre-season. What could have been a feeling of gloom has been transformed into optimism by Tisdale. With Ten points from their four opening games took Exeter top.

Tisdale said: “11th time lucky! The team and I had thought we may have a chance of winning this time but considered maybe it would never actually happen. Nonetheless we are grateful to have been chosen for this award and receive it knowing that the players who have performed in August have been ably supported by a committed larger squad and support staff."

George Burley chairs the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel.

He said: “Exeter City remained unbeaten for the first month of the season, winning three of their four games. Paul is the longest serving manager in the EFL and Exeter will be hoping to persuade him to sign a new contract as there are sure to be lots of clubs looking at his situation. They had a poor start last season but after this excellent month they will be hoping to keep their performances going.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “What a difference a year makes in football and for Paul Tisdale and his Exeter City side. The Grecians stood by their manager after a wretched start to last season, despite widespread calls for him to leave the role he inherited way back in June 2006. And that decision looks fully vindicated after an impressive August which ended with Tisdale’s troops sitting pretty at the summit of Sky Bet League Two taking ten points from their opening four fixtures.

Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Mikey Mumford said: “After Wembley heartbreak in May and the sale of star forward Ollie Watkins, the St James Park club were rated a 16/1 shot for divisional honours heading into the new campaign but have more than halved in price to 6/1 after their impressive start and are now 5/4 from 3/1 for promotion into League One. Tisdale looks like being rewarded for his fine efforts with a new contract and he will have aspirations of going up automatically after falling at the final flight last time around.”

The Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel comprises former Ipswich Town manager George Burley, Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman; EFL Marketing Director Drew Barrand, League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Mikey Mumford.
